At Beckalar, we have an attraction to not only the pretty patterns
on our Vintage Corelle sets, but their history too.
Here is some insight on why this brand has lived on – and on – for decades:
From the makers of CorningWare, Corelle was first produced and commercially marketed in 1972. The first collection of its kind was dubbed “Old Town Blue”.
Prior to this debut, however, one intriguing fact is that Corelle was created by accident.
Pyrex was the first thermal shock-resistant glassware by Corn
ing Glass Works. The hybrid proved resistant to temperature fluctuations and remains a big hit to this day.
Many years later, one of the company’s research scientists, Dr. S. Donald Stookey, began experiments on a glass prototype. The specimen was placed in a hot oven, which subsequently malfunctioned. The oven temperature rose to a blistering 900 degrees Celsius.
Dr. Stookey observed that the glass changed its color to milky white. While attempting to remove the piece from the hot oven, the sample fell – and to Dr. Stookey’s surprise, it did not break.
Today, collectors, dealers, and everyday people like you and I can attest to Corelle’s durability and versatility. For example, many Corelle bakeware dishes can be alternated between a fridge, oven, or microwave, without so much as a crack, chip, or stain taking place.
This resistance to everyday use makes us think of Corelle as an iron fist in a velvet glove because despite its hardiness, it’s still so pretty. Wouldn’t you agree?
